How to Make Money on Twitter!
John Sparks loves Twitter and joined us at Rocks Digital 2016 to share with us how to make money on Twitter.
He started with a lot of group participation to get us moving and engaged! Which is always a great start to a break out session.
One thing he did was make us all give someone a hug and change seats. The point was to take us out of our comfort zone. Life is not about comfort it is about character and social media is the same way. You have to be able to try new things and build relationships in social media.
Contact & Contract
The only difference between the 2 is an “R” which stands for relationships. You can’t sell anything if you don’t build a relationship first. Relationships build trust and people buy from those they trust.
John answered a number of questions from audience members.
How do you build a relationship and advertise in a retail line at the same time?
Diversification is the key. You need to have entertainment tweets, informative tweets as well as advertising tweets. You have to have diverse tweets.
To do this well, you can use Klout to schedule tweets because it is also a content aggregator. This is a free tool.
How to transition into a new niche?
Find others in that industry (competitors) and see how they do it and what they do. This will help you find your target audience for your new niche. It is all about research when you are trying to find your target audience.
The free tool, SocialRank.com, helps you filter your followers that tells you specifics about your followers and your audience. This also helps you to really know who your followers are even when you have thousands of them. It also gives you all the social media links for each follower.
Is it helpful to still use automatic follow tools?
Absolutely. It helps you with the important task of prospecting. Twitter is an excellent tool to use for prospecting. You are not allowed to prospect on LinkedIn according to their user agreement which many people don’t realize.
One of these tools is Manage Flitter. It lists potential followers based on those that follow competitors or similar businesses. It will automatically follow these people on Twitter. It will also allow you to see who doesn’t follow back if you want to later unfollow them. You can mass follow and then mass unfollow on this same tool. You still have to balance quality with quantity so you can actually build relationships.
How effective is Direct Messaging for building relationships?
John prefers to keep everything public because the great majority of DMs are spam messages. To get a personal conversation off the public you try to set up a phone call or he does not have a problem giving his email in a public tweet, but that is a personal preference. Auto DMs after a follow are not really engaging or creating a relationship. You have to ask questions to build a relationship. “Did you know” kind of questions. Like a cocktail party conversation.
What do you put in your Twitter Profile?
The words in your profile on Twitter should have key words and be sure you add your location – location is key. If you live or work in a suburb, use the largest city instead of the suburb for your location.
What kind of content works best for visual content?
For those using video, use pictures instead of putting in the whole video. Then you can link to the video.
All of these suggestions will help you build followers, relationships and eventually grow your business and make money with Twitter.
