Across the globe, June 30 is designated as a day to celebrate social media due to Mashable launching Social Media Day in 2010 as a way to recognize and celebrate social media’s impact on global communication. June 30th, 2015 marked the sixth-annual official global celebration.
I have been honored to speak at social media day since its inception and one of my favorite activities is getting to hang out with the attendees as well as the other speakers to listen and learn what they still want to know and what items I can immediately implement in my business. This year is no different in that, although I am on information overload, I also love going through all the blogs and social media posts online to sort through all of the content and decide how to turn what I learned into additional action items for myself and for my clients. One of the things I love about this particular event is that while it is celebrated globally, you will learn things to implement in your business locally as well. There has never been a year I didn’t have something to take action on that didn’t have to do with what I like to call “The three C’s”.
The three “C’s” of Social Media Day
• Content
• Connection
• Commerce
Here is my top takeaway in each category…
Content
Holly Byers, manager of brand partnerships at Pinterest while delivering the keynote at Social Media Day in Pittsburgh, PA shared a preview of the exciting developments that have just launched or will be introduced soon, including buyable pins and cinematic pins and that the average pin is re-pinned 11 times. I am looking forward to seeing how buyable pins will develop and be utilized in the business environment.
Connection
A consistent theme throughout Social Media Day is that it is NOT about selling but about building relationships. Those that know me know that I live and breathe that philosophy and that it is how I have built my business to the level of success I have. I love the talk that Jerod Morris gave at the Rocks Digital Social Media Day Conference on Content and Connections and his title “Content is NOT King, Connection is King” says it all.
Commerce
Sue Zimmerman, Instagram Marketing Expert spoke on how to drive more traffic with Instagram and how utilizing the proper approach to building your Instagram strategy makes Instagram a natural lead funnel.
My Social Media Tip
No matter where you attend the Social Media Day Conference, whether locally or you travel to attend elsewhere, remember to follow the #SMDay hashtag to get access to top social media shares and trending topics from many of the top ranking presenters who have shared their presentations via slideshare or other platforms. So, even if you were unable to attend a conference, there is no reason you cannot still participate and get actionable tips to implement in your business.
While every day is essentially social media day, in 2010 when Mashable launched Social Media Day, June 30 officially became a day set aside for us to step back and truly recognize the impact these tools have made on our lives. It is also a chance to celebrate and highlight the ways social media and digital innovation have come to define this generation.
So… these are my top takeaways, I would love to hear yours.
Please share in the comments one thing you are going to take action on from what you learned from Social Media Day 2015.
