Facebook Live – Could It Be Your New Social Media Valentine?

If you are looking for a new love to add to your social media strategy, Facebook Live might be it. There is no doubt that Facebook Live can be a great tool, and I love to promote great tools, but there are a few things you should consider before using it.

Tips on Adding Facebook Live to Your Marketing Strategy

When considering a new social media tool, you shouldn’t feel like you MUST use it just because “everyone else is doing it.” Instead, determine if it will be a good fit for your overall social media marketing strategy. You should also consider if it is something that your audience will (potentially) really enjoy and if you are comfortable with video. If all those are answered with a yes, then it is time for you to start adding Facebook Live to your marketing strategy.

Some Things to Remember When Getting Started with Facebook Live

Pick a Single Topic and Try to Stay On Track

Sure, you can have fun and be somewhat spontaneous, but remember that you’re representing your brand and you want to look like you have your ducks in a row.

Start by Writing a Good Description

That will help you to focus on your topic. You are, however, able to edit after the fact if you get an amazing comment that takes your video in a direction you hadn’t planned, but it doesn’t hurt to have that intriguing description written to compel people to join you live.

Make Sure to Check Your Surroundings

The best video in the world can be ruined by poor audio. Also, if you’re filming in your home office, check what’s up on your computer screen and laying out on your desk – you don’t want to accidentally expose confidential information. (And how many times have you seen that cringeworthy selfie someone took in the bathroom that revealed they weren’t wearing pants or something? DON’T BE THAT GUY!!)

Anticipate the Unexpected During Your Broadcast

Try to anticipate what might happen during your broadcast if you are out and about and in an uncontrolled environment. Could be something as benign as a photobomb … could be something like an unexpected question that will force you to think on your feet. Again, remember that you’re representing your brand!

A Facebook Live Broadcast Should Not Be a Commercial

One of the key things you want to remember is that Facebook Live should not be used as if it’s a commercial for your business. It’s certainly OK to talk about your business but make your content something that will be interesting to people. They’ll be more likely to tune in again if they found what you shared useful and informative.

Other Things to Consider When Using Facebook Live

Now you have some of the basics, what are some other things you want to consider? Remember, this is still social media.

  • Who are you targeting? What audience are you trying to capture with your Facebook Live?
  • When is your target audience most likely to be watching? If you’re aiming for college students, your optimal broadcast time will be different than if you’re trying to catch the mompreneur crowd.
  • Once you’ve nailed down a good time to broadcast, be consistent. If you have a set day and time that you’re live, it will help you to build an audience and they’ll share you with their friends. Make sure you use more than one platform to let your audience know you’re going live!
  • Be SOCIAL – say hello to people watching the stream by name. Make sure you’re reading questions and comments (and responding, as appropriate).

With a little bit of experimenting, an investment in some good equipment, and an authentic voice, you can harness the power of Facebook Live. Keep in mind that things live forever on the internet, so before you go live, be sure to check that your audio and video are working correctly. Represent your brand well and Facebook Live could be your next love!

Are you using Facebook Live for your business? Tell us about the response you are getting from your audience.
